Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck - impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence "Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I'll shut up about it?"
Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you've come to the right book, mostly!
In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door - not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.
So I was on twitter, and my friend Sarah (Storybound Girl) was tweeting some lines from Mindy Kaling’s show The Mindy Project. Of course, I retweeted them because they were FUNNY! I love that show. Then she asked if I’d read her book, and if I hadn’t, to check out the audiobook because it was GOOD. So, OF COURSE I listened!
Mindy Kaling’s autobiography is incredibly easy to relate to. If by the end you don’t feel like you’ve made a new friend, we probably won’t be friends. Her self-deprecating stories are endearing. Even the stories where she’s telling you about her successes are endearing. They don’t come off as snobby or showboaty. I’m telling you…you’re going to fall in (or more in) love with this woman. I loved that she talks about other actors I know. Kind of like getting first-hand true stories about them. I laughed so many times while listening to this. Sometimes while working and it totally got me weird looks, lol. I don’t care.
This audiobook is narrated by Mindy herself and she does such a great job. Only she could’ve narrated this and infused her comedy in just the right places. The audiobook is only 4 hours and 37 minutes long, so if you’re looking for a fast, fun listen… I must warn you though, there is a section toward the end that is not beneficial for those of us listening to the book. Even Mindy points this out. There’s a section where there are photographs instead of narrative…so yeah, I kind of need to find the book at my library or leaf through it at a bookstore to see them, because duh. Other than that, FANTASTIC audiobook! :)
