Thursday Tracks: True Sadness

16th Jun 2016 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2016, Thursday Tracks

GUYS! This weekend I’m going to see The Avett Brothers in Dallas with my main squeeze, who has never listened to their music by the way. I’m so very excited about him seeing them live, even if the temperatures are going to reach 99 degrees, y’all! That means that it’ll feel more than 100 degrees at a certain point in the day! WHOA.

So anyway, The Avett Brothers’s TRUE SADNESS album will be released June 24th, but we’ve gotten four songs from it already, and this track is one of them. They’re all great so far, btw. SO GOOD! As always.

One thing to always take note of with their songs is the lyrics. Their songs always have such raw honesty to them:

‘Cause I still wake up shaken by dreams
And I hate to say it but the way it seems
Is that no one is fine
Take the time to peel a few layers and you will find
True sadness

And then it has this other part about not objectifying women that just made me tear up a little:

Angela became a target
As soon as her beauty was seen
By young men who try to reduce her down
To a scene on an X rated screen
Is she not more than the curve of her hips?
Is she not more than the shine on her lips?
Does she not dream to sing and to live and to dance down her own path
Without being torn apart?
Does she not have a heart?

Take a listen and tell me what you think!

You were a friend to me when my wheels were off the track
I know you say there is no need, but I intend to pay you back
When my mind was turning loose and all my thoughts were turning black
You shined a light on me and I intend to pay you back

When I was a child, I depended on a bottle
Full-grown I’ve been known to lean on a bottle
But you’re the real deal in a world of imposters
And I’ve seen the program make men out of monsters

‘Cause I still wake up shaken by dreams
And I hate to say it but the way it seems
Is that no one is fine
Take the time to peel a few layers and you will find
True sadness

Adam and Eve must have really done a number
On that garden when the apple was finished
Leaving behind them a den made of sadness
A damage that can’t or won’t be replenished

‘Cause I still wake up shaken by dreams
And I hate to say it but the way it seems
Is that no one is fine
Take the time to peel a few layers and you will find
True sadness

Angela became a target
As soon as her beauty was seen
By young men who try to reduce her down
To a scene on an X rated screen

Is she not more than the curve of her hips?
Is she not more than the shine on her lips?
Does she not dream to sing and to live and to dance down her own path
Without being torn apart?
Does she not have a heart?

I cannot go on with this evil inside me
I step out my front door and I feel it surround me
Just know the kingdom of God is within you
Even though the battle is bound to continue

‘Cause I still wake up shaken by dreams
And I hate to say it but the way it seems
Is that no one is fine
Take the time to peel a few layers and you will find
True sadness
True sadness
True true sadness

Thursday Tracks: Kiss This

9th Jun 2016 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2016, Thursday Tracks

I’ve been wanting to feature Kiss This for WEEKS now, but have been slacking on the Thursday Tracks front (sorry about that, friends!). Anyway, this song is just kickass and it makes me want to dance. *shimmys around in chair* Enjoy!!

Thomas said stay home,
Get away from me,
Saying I was bad for you,
He got his way,
I’m gone for good.
Making up stories,
Keeping it secret,
Taking your word for truth,
You were bad for me,
So I’m gone for good.

I,
Did all I could,
So kiss this one more time,
‘Cause I’m gone for good,
You,
Misunderstood,
So kiss this one last time,
And I’m gone for good.

Thomas said sorry,
Coming home crawling,
Didn’t give a shit before,
He stole from me,
So I’m gone for good,
Getting back from these no second chances,
Another phone call ignored,
You are back for me,
But I’m gone for good.

I,
Did all I could,
So kiss this one more time,
‘Cause I’m gone for good,
You,
Misunderstood,
So kiss this one last time,
And I’m gone for good.

Can I get it all?
Kiss this,
Kiss this.

Kiss this,
I,
Did all I could,
So kiss this one more time,
One more time!
I,
Did all I could,
So kiss this one more time,
‘Cause I’m gone for good,
You,
Misunderstood,
So kiss this one last time,
And I’m gone for good.

Can I get it all?
Kiss this

Thursday Tracks: Nashville – Four Season of Amazing Music

26th May 2016 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2016, Thursday Tracks

Nashville Music Cast Gone with the Words

Sad sad news, friends. Last night ABC aired the final episode of the tv show Nashville. Now, it wasn’t a planned finale, the show was cancelled by the network, so of course it didn’t end properly. It even had a cliffhanger! UGH! There is a petition going around to revive the show on another network so if you care to, sign it HERE.

From the first episode of season one, I knew this show was something I would love. Not only was the music SO GOOD, the drama and the romances kept me coming back. The cast is so talented! All the ones who sing on the show are actually singing and have amazing voices.

For me, the breakouts or standouts were Clare Bowen, Sam Palladio, and sisters Lennon & Maisy Stella.

Some familiar faces really surprised me with their singing though! I’m talking about Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere.

And one other face was familiar to me from a little movie you may have seen called TUCK EVERLASTING… the one and only beautiful face of Jonathan Jackson.

The number of songs (80+) in my “Nashville Faves” spotify playlist tells you just how much I loved the music of this show…

Are you a fan of this show and their music? What are some of your favorite songs? Are you as devastated to see it cancelled as I am?? Join in my pain!

Thursday Tracks: Cop Car

28th Apr 2016 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2016, Thursday Tracks

Gone with the Words Thursday Tracks Cop Car Sam Hunt

From the moment I first heard this song I instantly thought it would make a great scene in a YA/NA book, or even a flashback in an adult contemporary romance. I JUST WANT IT IN A BOOK, OK!

Well when I brought this up on twitter yesterday, the lovely Allison (@bookishfeminist) pointed me toward THIS:

YES, PLEASE! But then author Laura Trentham chimed in to say THIS:

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIIIIIIIVE!

Needless to say I’ll be picking up her series very soon. hehe

Hope you enjoy! :)

We drove right past
That no trespassing sign
We sat on the tailgate
And watched the planes take off

We thought we had all night
There was no need to rush
That’s when those cops
Came pulling up
And I thought
Man, ain’t this some shhhh

Your daddy’s gonna kill me
But if I survive tonight
I wouldn’t change one thing
Baby, yeah
I know it sounds crazy

But there was somethin bout the way
The blue lights were shinin
Bringing out the freedom in your eyes
I was too busy watching you
Going wild child
To be worried about going to jail
You were thinking that
Running for it
Would make a good story
I was thinking you were crazy as hell
And you were so
Innocent
But you were stealing my heart
I fell in love in the back of a cop car

Man, they weren’t playin
They sure threw those cuffs on quick
You tried to sweet talk ’em
They didn’t fall for it
But I did
You were on the left
I was on the right
I knew you didn’t smoke
When you asked him for a light
And I laughed
He got mad and slammed the door

Your daddy’s gonna kill me
But if I survive tonight
I wouldn’t change one thing
Baby, yeah
I know it sounds crazy

But there was somethin bout the way
The blue lights were shinin
Bringing out the freedom in your eyes
I was too busy watching you
Going wild child
To be worried about going to jail
You were thinking that
Running for it
Would make a good story
I was thinking you were crazy as hell
And you were so
Innocent
But you were stealing my heart
I fell in love in the back of a cop car

Side by side
And locked in tight
They were taking their time
But we didn’t mind

We talked
And we laughed
We sat real close
By the time they let us go
I was already gone

But there was somethin bout the way
The blue lights were shinin
Bringing out the freedom in your eyes
I was too busy watching you
Going wild child
To be worried about going to jail
You were thinking that
Running for it
Would make a good story
I was thinking you were crazy as hell
And you were so
Innocent
But you were stealing my heart
I fell in love in the back of a cop car

Thursday Tracks: Let It Go

21st Apr 2016 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2016, Thursday Tracks

Thursday Tracks: Let It Go by James Bay

This week on Dancing with the Stars James Bay performed live and I was reminded once again why I thoroughly enjoy his music. His voice is just magical and emotive and I love it so, so much.

Let It Go is a song about breaking up. It’s about giving up on something that’s just not working and letting it go. A lot of times we have a hard time doing this, even when we’re unhappy. It always takes one person to just say it and follow through with it. It may hurt at first but it’s worth it in the end.

Take a listen :)

Album Version

Spotify Sessions Version (Live)

From walking home and talking loads
To seeing shows in evening clothes with you
From nervous touch and getting drunk
To staying up and waking up with you

But now we’re sleeping at the edge
Holding something we don’t need
All this delusion in our heads
Is gonna bring us to our knees

So come on let it go
Just let it be
Why don’t you be you
And I’ll be me

Everything’s that’s broke
Leave it to the breeze
Why don’t you be you
And I’ll be me[x2]

From throwing clothes across the floor
To teeth and claws and slamming doors at you
If this is all we’re living for
Why are we doing it, doing it, doing it anymore

I used to recognize myself
It’s funny how reflections change
When we’re becoming something else
I think it’s time to walk away

So come on let it go
Just let it be
Why don’t you be you
And I’ll be me

Everything’s that’s broke
Leave it to the breeze
Why don’t you be you
And I’ll be me[x2]

Trying to fit your hand inside of mine
When we know it just don’t belong
There’s no force on earth
Could make me feel right, no

Whoa

Trying to push this problem up the hill
When it’s just too heavy to hold
Think now’s the time to let it slide

So come on let it go
Just let it be
Why don’t you be you
And I’ll be me

Everything’s that’s broke
Leave it to the breeze
Let the ashes fall
Forget about me

Come on let it go
Just let it be
Why don’t you be you
And I’ll be me

And I’ll be me

Thursday Tracks: No Good in Goodbye

14th Apr 2016 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2016, Thursday Tracks

Thursday Tracks: No Good in Goodbye

You ever hear a song at the beginning of the week and it just stays with you allllll week? That’s what happened with me and No Good in Goodbye. It’s by no means a new song to me and I’ve always loved it. The Script has some of my all-time favorite songs, so you may see a few more soon. I’ve posted their stuff before. I featured  The Man Who Can’t Be Moved along with a teaser for the book Tempest by Julie Cross because I thought the song fits it perfectly. Then last year I featured If You Ever Come Back, which is such a heartbreaking song. I hope you guys enjoy this one!

Thursday Tracks: Tompkins Square Park

31st Mar 2016 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2016, Thursday Tracks

Thursday Tracks: Tompkins Square Park

This weekend I’ll get to see Mumford & Sons in concert and I’m so VERY excited about it. We saw them about two years ago and it became one of my all-time favorite concerts.

This was right before they went on “hiatus” and then came back with a new album that was different from their first two. It was a good different and still very much them. I love it a lot. I remember when the first note of the first track played I got teary eyed. It struck my heart in the most beautiful way. So today I’m featuring that particular song, even though I love so many by them. I hope you enjoy!

Oh babe, meet me in Tompkins Square Park
I wanna hold you in the dark
One last time
Just one last time

And oh babe, can you tell what’s on my tongue?
Can you guess that I’ll be gone?
With the twilight
With the twilight

But no flame burns forever, oh no
You and I both know this all too well
And most don’t even last the night
No they don’t, they say they don’t

Oh babe, I’ve never been so lost
I wanna hear you lie
One last time
Just one last time

But oh babe, I really wish you would not cry
I only ever told you one lie
When it could have been a thousand
It might as well have been a thousand

But no flame burns forever, oh no
You and I both know this all too well
And most don’t even last the night
No they don’t, they say they don’t

And we can talk it round again girl
Round and round, round and round again
Or we could leave it out to die
Leave it out just leave it out

I never tried to trick you babe
I just tried to work it out
But I was swallowed up by doubt
If only things were black and white
‘Cause I just want to hold you tight
Without holding back my mind
Without holding back my mind

But no flame burns forever, oh no
You and I both know this all too well
And most don’t even last the night

I’m no longer going to be adding a linky since it’s just an extra step that isn’t needed at this time, so please leave me the links to your posts in the comments! :) Also, I may start reserving this feature for times I don’t have anything to post, so in case you don’t see one posted at anytime, don’t worry about it. I was either too tired to post or something else had to take its place.

Thursday Tracks: Water

10th Mar 2016 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2016, Thursday Tracks

Thursday Tracks: Water

It’s been a wet week here in Texas and when I was trying to pick a song for today, this one came on the radio: Water. Ha! I took it as a sign to feature it today. It wasn’t the first time I’d heard it and I’d saved it to feature it at some point, so today wins. :) I’m not too sure what the song is really about but it has song crazy good melodies and some of the lyrics are so touching. Hope you enjoy!

Thursday Tracks: The Suffers

3rd Mar 2016 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2016, Thursday Tracks

Thursday Tracks: The Suffers

I’ve been wanting to feature this Houston band for a couple of weeks now but I couldn’t decide on a song, so we’re just going to feature the band.

My fiancé is friends with the drummer (Nick Zamora) and has been a longtime supporter of this band, even contributing to their kickstarter campaign to raise money to put out their album (because, shockingly, they’re not signed to a label… though I don’t know if this is intentional or not. I’ll find out and update!).

Their album was released on Feb. 12 and they had a special show for those kickstarter supports so we got to go see them play in a small record store. The next day they had their album release show and we went to see them again, but this time in their full glory, and OMG was it incredible. Their music just moves through my body.

Read all about them on their website and check make sure to check out their full album, which you can stream on Spotify.

Thursday Tracks: Archie, Marry Me

25th Feb 2016 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2016, Thursday Tracks

Thursday Tracks: Archie, Marry Me

So one of my favorite genres of music is indie pop and so I turn to the college music radio station for new finds. This band and song is an example of one of those finds. Alvvays (pronounced Always) is from Toronto and are considered indie pop but also jangle pop. Wiki tells us, “Jangle pop is a genre of alternative rock from the early-to-mid-1980s that “marked a return to the chiming or jangly guitars and pop melodies of the ’60s”” I love that type of sound, so you can see why I came to love this song.

Ok, enjoy!

Thursday Tracks: Yellow

This weekend is Valentine’s Day and to celebrate I’m sharing one of my favorite love songs ever. Of course, I’ve always interpreted Yellow to be a love song, but others have said they believe it’s about death. Ugh, ok creepers. In reality, Yellow is not about anything more than just inspiration striking at the right moment for Chris Martin and the other members of Coldplay (according to the Wiki page).

Whatever, Coldplay. I believe it’s a beautiful love song. Enjoy!

Fun fact: I also relate this song to the book Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins. Check out that post HERE. :)

Thursday Tracks: 2015 Year in Music

2015 was a GREAT year in music for me. I found so much new music to love and reconnected with old favorites too. I went to million concerts–exaggerating, of course. :)

Here’s all the concerts I went to:

Feb: Motion City Soundtrack
Mar: John Legend
Mar: Fall Out Boy
July: Third Eye Blind/Dashboard Confessional/Augustana
July: The Avett Brothers
Sept: Kelly Clarkson/Pentatonix/Eric Hutcherson
Sept: Ed Sheeran/Christina Perri
Sept: Passion Pit/Atlas Genius
Nov: Motion City Soundtrack
Dec: CHVRCHES/Robert Delong

Whoooooa! Right?! I feel very lucky.

Because of all the concerts I went to, all of TOP spotify lists had some of the above bands in them. Check it out!

Thanks, Spotify!

Ok, so today I don’t have a specific song for you guys, but instead I’m sharing my whole Thursday Tracks Spotify Playlist, where you can listen to all the songs I’ve posted thus far. Let me know if any of them made your favorites!
