The Morganville Vampire’s 10th Anniversary – Guest Post: Regarding Myrnin by Rachel Caine

I think it’s time to talk about Myrnin. You know, the guy who lurks in the alley next to Gramma Day’s house? In the shack? You might also know him as the adorable/terrifying vampire who’s built a steampunk lab underneath the shack, blown it up a few times, can’t use bookcases worth a damn, invented a computer that runs on blood and requires a real brain, and … wears bunny slippers. Vampire bunny slippers.

These bunny slippers. (FULL DISCLOSURE: Myrnin’s never watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I have. Therefore I can say they are *probably* Killer Rabbit slippers.)

Lots of readers are hooked on Myrnin, and write in to ask for more, more, more Myrnin. Which I love, of course. But I thought I’d tell you Myrnin’s origin story.

The character of Myrnin was a placeholder in the first two books. In my head, I had a slot for the “strange scientist” who helped create and run Morganville’s various weird systems, like the field that makes you forget the town when you leave it, the portals Amelie uses as her own personal express lane, etc. But I didn’t know anything about that guy. He was just a shadow in the dark, which was why, in the beginning, I described him as the trapdoor spider that lurks in the shadows of the alley, and also might be the actual inspiration for the Arthurian legends of Merlin. I wanted to discover him, in a sense, as I wrote him.

Discovering him was more like opening a door and finding a fully formed person on the other side of it.

With its eclectic mix of vampire and human citizens, Morganville, Texas, has always been a risky place to call home. But with the invasion of the vampire’s deadliest enemy, Morganville isn’t just in danger—it’s dying…

Ever since the draug—mysterious creatures that prey on vampires—took over Morganville, the lives of student Claire Danvers and her friends have been thrown into turmoil. Most of the town’s residents have evacuated, but Claire, Shane, Eve and Michael have chosen to stay and fight.Using the city’s water system to spread, the draug have rapidly multiplied. Things in Morganville look grim, especially since vampire Amelie—the town founder—has been infected by the master draug’s bite.

Now, if Claire and her friends don’t figure out how to cure Amelie and defeat the draug, it looks like Morganville will become little more than a ghost town…

If you’ve not read this series, there will be spoilers for you in this review...you’ve been warned.

Black Dawn was for sure one of the more intense installments in this series. I mean, they’re all intense, and their lives are always hanging in the balance, but in Black Dawn you start to feel the beginning of the end. This time is not so much the humans in danger as the vampires. The vampires actually need the humans’ help this go ‘round. Still…hands down my favorite part of this series is the relationships…

Michael and Eve have such a delicate thread they’re hanging on by in this book. They’re trying to get over the fact that Michael completely lost it in the last book and attacked Eve. It wasn’t really his fault, but Eve can’t help how she reacts to him now. All I wanted was for them to work it out. They have such a difficult relationship as it is already, with him being a vampire and her being human, but they love each other with SO MUCH. With everything, really.

Then there’s Shane and Claire, who can’t catch a break. Will they ever be happy together?! One or the other is always in danger and having to save the other. But they have such a pure love, that I believe they will survive through anything. Though once again, Shane is put through another ringer. But while in it, we discover his most deepest dreams…and it breaks my heart!! I want all that for him too!! For them! SIGH!!

Myrnin is my second favorite thing in this series, and he kind of pissed me off in this book. I understood his reasoning, I guess, but I didn’t love it. You learn early on in this series that some of the characters you love will not live through each book. Someone dies in this book and it made me really sad. But I think the most shocking moment was the ending. I was NOT expecting that scenario, and I am SO scared of what’s to come. Especially with the two most powerful vampires in Morganville on your bad side. Bitter Blood, bring it! I have faith in my favorite fab four. :)

What Some Friends Had to Say About It…

Savy @ Books with Bite – “My final verdict, MIND BLOWN! Black Dawn features everything you want a a book.

Amber I. @ AwesomeSauce Bookclub – “This book was so addicting that I had Amber R reading it to me while we drove to Chicago for the RT book signing.lol

Miss Vain @ Miss Vain’s Paranormal Fantasy – “There’s a reason why after reading  Twelve books in this series I’m still obsessed with it! Rachel Caine has one of the most vivid imaginations out there in the fantasy writing world.

For years, the human and vampire residents of Morganville, Texas, have managed to co-exist in peace. But now that the threat to the vampires has been defeated, the human residents are learning that the gravest danger they face is the enemy within…

Thanks to the eradication of the parasitic creatures known as the draug, the vampires of Morganville have been freed of their usual constraints. With the vampires indulging their every whim, the town’s human population is determined to hold on to their lives by taking up arms. But college student Claire Danvers isn’t about to take sides, considering she has ties to both the humans and the vampires.

To make matters worse, a television show comes to Morganville looking for ghosts, just as vampire and human politics collide. Now, Claire and her friends have to figure out how to keep the peace without ending up on the nightly news… or worse.

That is a fierce cover, CB!! (CB = Claire Bear = Eve’s nickname for Claire) :) Can’t wait to read it!

With her boss preoccupied researching the Founder Houses in Morganville, student Claire Danvers is left to her own devices when she learns that three vampires have vanished without a trace.

She soon discovers that the last person seen with one of the missing vampires is someone who has just moved to town—a mysterious individual named Magnus. After an uneasy encounter with Morganville’s newest resident, Claire is certain Magnus isn’t merely human. But is Magnus a vampire—or something else entirely?

One thing is clear: Magnus is to blame for the disappearances. And if vampires are turning into victims, what chance does a human like Claire have?

Oh, our dear Morganville gang. Last Breath was a rough one for you, wasn’t it? Rachel Caine really dragged you guys through the mud, didn’t she? And by the end, things haven’t only gotten marginally better. *sigh* Come here….you guys need a hug.

In Last Breath, every one is in danger. Vampires are being hunted, and in turn, the vampires want to “free” the humans and get the heck outta dodge. Also, have you ever wondered why the town of Morganville, TX was chosen by Amelie? We discover that in this book! It’s a crazy reason…but would you expect anything less? This whole book takes place in a span of two or three days I think, and they were INTENSE!!

The fact that it was an intense book isn’t really what got me this time…it was THE death. THE death that happens in this book and its aftermath completely broke me. It was looking pretty bleak for a moment there…but thankfully, Rachel Caine came through and mended my little broken heart. Be prepared, friends!

Before all the crazyness hits though, we had all kinds of problems with the impending nuptials of a certain couple who shall remain nameless. I’m talking opposition from all sides! I have faith they will make it happen though. :)

Myrnin gets his own paragraph, simply because he’s awesome. Although he doesn’t get any driving scenes in this book, it wasn’t for lack of trying on his part. I really hope to see him behind the wheel in the next book though, because it is hilarious! He also has some very real moments in this book. We get to see a side of him he doesn’t show nearly enough…his vulnerable side. I love you, Myrnin!!

I’ve been really impressed with the last few books in this series. Ghost Town, Bite Club, and now Last Breath, have all been really, really great. I look forward to the next four amazing books to come!! If you have not picked up this series yet, don’t wait much longer!

After discovering that vampires populate her town, college student Claire Danvers knows that the undead just want to live their lives. But someone else wants them to get ready to rumble.

There's a new extreme sport getting picked up on the Internet: bare- knuckle fights pitting captured vampires against each other-or humans. Tracking the remote signal leads Claire- accompanied by her friends and frenemies-to discover that what started as an online brawl will soon threaten everyone in Morganville...

In this tenth installment of The Morganville Vampires series, Rachel Caine puts Shane through the ringer, figuratively and literally! The book picks up soon after the conclusion of the amazing Ghost Town, which is one of my favorite books in the series, along with Carpe Corpus.

A gym has opened up in Morganville, one that will be teaching humans self-defense by way of martial arts and will be taught by none other than a vampire. This is apparently what Shane has wanted in town his whole life, a gym where he can work on his fighting skills, and is pretty much first in line to sign up. Soon after this though, things begin to get strange. I know…shocker! When is it not strange in Morganville?

What was surprising, and very cool, was that we get two alternating perspectives in this book, Claire’s and Shane’s. Since Shane began training to fight, he starts to lose his cool over little things more and more often, and we get to peek into his head after these freak outs. Let me tell you, it’s not pretty. It is completely heart wrenching. He is spiraling into this black hole and is not even aware of it. To top it off, he cruelly pushes Claire, Michael, and Eve away. Being the amazing friends that they are, those three won’t ever give up Shane, no matter how bad it gets.

Meanwhile, Myrnin and Claire are still keeping Frank Collin’s existence a secret from most everyone. It doesn’t stay that way for long. Myrnin and Frank together crack me up because they hate each other so much. And I can’t believe how unlikely a hero Frank has turned out to be these past two books! I’m also really intrigued by Amelie and Oliver’s relationship…are they? Aren’t they? Tell us!! :)

A lot of people get hurt in this book, physically and emotionally. But there were also some really tender moments between Shane & Claire and Michael & Eve, who by the way have an interesting secret they have been keeping to themselves. Not everyone’s excited or happy about this secret, but I totally was! No she’s not preggers. :P

I couldn’t have been happier with the ending though. It was just so touching. Now lets see what trouble they’ll get into in Last Breath. This series is so good and if you haven’t gotten around to reading it, you need to soon!

While developing a new system to maintain Morganville's defenses, student Claire Danvers discovers a way to amplify vampire mental powers. Through this, she's able to re-establish the field around this vampire-infested Texas college town that protects it from outsiders.

But the new upgrades have an unexpected consequence: people inside the town begin to slowly forget who they are-even the vampires. Soon, the town's little memory problem has turned into a full-on epidemic. Now Claire needs to figure out a way to pull the plug on her experiment- before she forgets how to save Morganville...

“He lives in a hole in the ground, dresses funny, and occasionally eats his assistants,” Eve said. “Define crazy.”

Claire closed her eyes. “Okay. I think he wants to put my brain in a jar and wire it into the machine.”

LOL, gotta love crazy Myrnin.

I pretty much loved this series from book one. Though I have some in the series I like better than others, there’s no question they’re all equally exciting. I can’t wait to get my hands on this one. :)
