Book Blast: Change of Heart by S. E. Edwards + Excerpt & Giveaway!

31st May 2013 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2013, Book Blasts, Features/Memes, Giveaways

That’s how I’ve gotten through nineteen years of life. It’s what I do every single day—no matter how badly the odds are stacked against me.

Persevere, and survive.

Those are my two guiding words. I never knew either of my parents. I have no family and no home. The only person I could ever rely on was myself. In this cruel world, that’s about as much as I could ask for.

Love? Hah. Don’t talk to me about love. I stopped believing in it the day my first boyfriend ripped out my heart three years ago.

That’s why love is the last thing on my mind when I leave a packed college bar with a captivating stranger. Yet everything changes when I’m awakened in the middle of the night by a pounding at the door. Suddenly, an arrangement meant for just one night threatens to become something much deeper.

All expectations are thrown to the wind as I’m tangled in a dangerous world unlike anything I can believe. The man I met has secrets swirling around him like a dark cape. I’m about to become his biggest one…

Together, we stumble toward the elevator. Rich breaks away for a second to hit the button. The light doesn’t come on.“Damn,” he growls, “it’s busted again.”

I’m one step ahead of him. I’d spotted the stairs when we entered. I grab his hand and pull him after me with no hesitation. I start up the cement stairwell, determined to get to his room as fast as possible.

“Penny, wait.”

I look back, confused. “What?”

A devilish smile plays on his lips. “Only this.” Without warning his hands wrap around my waist, and I’m being lifted up as easily as if I were a doll. He turns to the side and presses my body against the wall, suspending me between him and the concrete.

His mouth crashes down on mine again. I curl my legs around his torso, locking my ankles together, and kiss him back with the passion reserved for a lover after ten long years apart. I didn’t think it was possible, but I’m getting even more turned on. Rich’s hands move down to grasp the outside of my thighs, and I moan into his kiss as the muscles of my core clench in sinful fashion. I want him so
badly. If we don’t get somewhere private soon, I won’t be wholly opposed to jumping him in public.

I gasp as he steps away, freeing me from the wall. I start to fall, but one of his hands darts down to catch me just beneath the knees. The other one cradles my shoulders. Before I know it, I’m slung across his arms like a bride on her wedding night.

“I’ve always wanted to carry a girl up these stairs,” Rich admits.

I laugh, and wrap my arm around his neck. “Oh, you are just the best type of romantic.”

Four flights of stairs later, Rich pushes open the fire door to a dimly-lit hallway. He carries me down the hall and stops in front of an entrance on the right. He sets me down, then fishes around in his jeans for the key. When the door creaks open, he sweeps a hand out in front of him. “Welcome to my humble abode.”

I walk in, curious about his apartment. I tend to side with the camp of people who believe that a person’s living arrangements can reveal a lot about his personality. But, I don’t find much to work with here.

The apartment is sparse and dark. Pale moonlight filters in through the balcony window, shining down on the only piece of furniture present: a queen size mattress lying on the floor of the living room. The red brick walls are totally empty—no girly posters or other things I might expect in a bachelor’s apartment. There are no lamps, no chairs, no couches.

After a moment, I notice a second piece of furniture: a small, old-school CRT TV camped in one corner of the studio apartment.

Rich switches on the light. “So?” he asks, “what do you think?”

I walk past the entrance. There’s one hall leading away from the room. It is filled with brown cardboard boxes. Lots and lots of boxes. “Did you just move in or something?”

Rich laughs behind me. “Yeah, something like that. You want a drink?”

“A drink?” I say. “No, I—”

The words catch in my throat as he grabs my hips and spins me around. I had no idea he’d come so close. He’d moved from the door to me without making a sound. His fingers lock together against my lower back, and he tugs me into him, pressing my belly to his waist. I feel his growing erection right away, and a diabolical excitement builds inside me.

Nothing happens.

For a long moment, Richard just holds me like that, staring into my eyes as I’m left dangling off his arms. His irises are the color of sea mist. I’m hypnotized by the deep intensity I see brewing just beneath the surface. I have no doubt that that type of intensity is mirrored in my eyes.

Then, moving slowly, as if restraining himself, Richard lowers his mouth to cover mine. This time, his kiss is sweet and gentle. Subtle and caring. He explores my upper lip first, then traces the line going to the corner of my mouth. His lips form a perfect mold over mine.

I was wrong before. This is the kiss reserved for a lover you haven’t seen in ten years.

I’m Scarlett Edwards. I’m a full-time student (2nd year, undergrad) and part-time writer. I hope to switch those around soon!

I’m kind of old fashioned. I write all my stories using paper and ink. At the end of the day, I transcribe them on my laptop. It takes a bit longer, but writing in a notebook really focuses my thoughts.

I love vintage photography. I have an old-school film camera that was my mom’s from before I was born. I use it to take pictures almost every day. Yours to Savor is the first full book I worked on. It went through six drafts, and took me ten months to complete. In the two months since getting it done, I finished two drafts of brand new stories. I’m getting faster!

I love hearing from my readers. I love getting feedback about my books. I’m just getting started, and plan on doing this writing gig for a long, long time. I take inspiration from all the indie romance authors. Addison Moore, Samantha Young, Colleen Hoover, Jessica Sorensen, and everyone else…. you girls rock!

A cop's craving to know more about the woman next door could prove fatal in the steamy new novel from New York Times bestselling author Lori Foster

As the person responsible for taking down a brutal human trafficker, Alice Appleton fears retaliation at every turn. No one knows about her past, which is exactly how she prefers it...until the sexy cop next door comes knocking.

Detective Reese Bareden thinks he knows what makes women tick, but his ever-elusive neighbor keeps him guessing like no other. Is his goal to unmask Alice's secrets? Or protect her from a dangerous new threat? One thing is certain: their chemistry is a time bomb waiting to explode. And with no one to trust but each other, Reese and Alice are soon drawn into a deadly maze of corruption, intrigue and desire-and into the line of fire....

Bare It All had all the elements I enjoy from any Lori Foster book…it had sexy guys with guns, danger, and passion, and if there’s one thing I can say for certain about Lori Foster’s books is that they are always steamy!

While Bare It All was certainly an enjoyable read, it is a long book, and at times it felt like I wasn’t making any progress with it. We do got a lot of story, a lot of it felt like setup for the next book, which I’m guessing will be Rowdy’s, but we do get the back story into Alice that I know I wanted to get. I enjoyed the moments where Reese and Alice spend time together. They were really attracted to each other from the start and every time they were intimate, it was easy and it was STEAMY. They had a few things to work through, and Alice had a little trouble opening to Reese at first, but eventually they got it together. I think Reese was the perfect male for Alice. He was tough but sensitive. Kind of like a big teddy bear. :) And I certainly didn’t expect Alice to be doing the things she was doing. This girl has balls! LOL

The danger didn’t feel as high-stakes as the previous books I’ve read in this series, but there was still a fair amount of it to count. I’m also very curious to see what the conflict will be in the next book as the setup wasn’t too clear on that direction. I liked how this was a sort of mash-up with the Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor series. I had actually forgotten that Alice was in Trace of Fever, which is my favorite book of that series. There is a cameo from Trace of Fever that I loved. I’ll keep a mystery for you guys though. ;)

So if you’re looking for a steamy romance with some action, pick up Bare It All!

thearrivalsThe Arrivals by Melissa Marr
Add it on Goodreads!
Publication Date: July 2nd 2013 by William Morrow & Company

The Arrivals is the second novel for adults by internationally bestselling author Melissa Marr.

Chloe walks into a bar and blows five years of sobriety. When she wakes, she finds herself in an unfamiliar world, The Wasteland. She discovers people from all times and places have also arrived there: Kitty and Jack, a brother and sister from the Wild West; Edgar, a prohibition bootlegger; Francis, a one-time hippie; Melody, a mentally unbalanced 1950s housewife; and Hector, a former carnival artist.

None know why they arrived there–or if there is way out of a world populated by monsters and filled with corruption.

Just as she did in Graveminder, Marr has created a vivid fantasy world that will enthrall. Melissa Marr’s The Arrivals is a thoroughly original and wildly imagined tale about making choices in a life where death is unpredictable and often temporary.

INTERNET! WHY am I just now finding out about this book?!?!?! Melissa Marr is one of my favorite authors and so I can’t believe I didn’t know about this book! Really though, it’s a good thing, because now I don’t have to wait forever until it’s released. :D

“For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel envy…”

Tess is the exact opposite of her beautiful, athletic sister. And that’s okay. Kristina is the sporty one, Tess is the smart one, and they each have their place. Until Kristina is diagnosed with cancer. Suddenly Tess is the center of the popular crowd, everyone eager for updates. There are senior boys flirting with her. Yet the smiles of her picture-perfect family are cracking and her sister could be dying. Now Tess has to fill a new role: the strong one. Because if she doesn’t hold it together, who will?

I’m Not Her was chosen to be this week’s iBookstore Book of the Week! So what this means for you is that you can get it for FREE anytime this week! Go HERE to get yourself a copy.

And to help you get an idea of what you’ll get in I’m Not Her, Janet has given us some fun content…

10 Fun Facts About I’m Not Her

  1. In a hospital scene in I’m Not Her one of the nurses is named Tracey and she takes Kristina’s flowers home to her daughter, Carly.  Tracey is the name of my sister, Carly is her daughter in real life.
  2. Every single one of my books has a character named Carly in it. This is a tribute to my niece, Carly. The characters are not based on her per se, but there has to be a Carly in my books. Like a superstition or good luck charm or something.
  3. This book is dedicated to my sister Tracey.  I was able to keep it a secret until Final Page Proofs came in.
  4. My niece Ciara plays volleyball and her nickname is CEE. She got recruited by a university in the States and is playing there. None of the volleyball players in the book were based on her though. She is a cool like a rock star.
  5. I thought Clark Trent was a funny name because of Superman’s secret identity. The Superman cape Clark wears in a scene cracked me up.
  6. I named a couple of the teachers in I’m Not Her after dogs I’ve had.  Peppsy (Mr. Pepson) and Meeko (Mr. Meekers)
  7. In a scene Tess listens to Hedly on her iPod. I LOVE Jacob, the lead singer for the band. He was on the only season of Canadian Idol I watched.
  8. I named the golf course that Nick works at and Tess’s Dad plays at after my husband. Largurt (Larry Gurtler)
  9. I’m Not Her was originally called The Weight of Bones, but when I first started writing it I titled it Dance Big Sister.
  10. Tess’s love of the Discovery Channel and Myth Busters were inspired by my son.

Thank you, Janet!!

Now go get your free copy, friends!

The Sky is Everywhere

I love that this cover is actually a scene from the book. :)

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight

Top Ten Tuesday: Books When You Need Something Light & Fun

7th May 2013 Jess @ Gone with the Words 2013, Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday: Books When You Need Something Light & Fun

When I’m in the mood for light and/or fun books to read, my mind automatically goes to Romance novels, mostly Contemporary, but also Historicals. Because of that, I decided to make you guys my Top Ten faves.

1. Star Crossed (Stargazer #1) by Jennifer Echols – This book was totally fun AND seriously funny. Old college class rivals with secret attractions for one another who are now working for competing PR firms, with some seriously troublesome clients who are dating? FUN, RIGHT?!

2. Just One of the Guys by Kristan Higgins – This book has first loves, big semi-crazy family, and FIREFIGHTERS! Need I say more?

3. Until There Was You by Kristan Higgins – Oh, this book. *sigh* It makes my heart smile just thinking about it. It has such a cute heroine and such a real, vulnerable hero. I love it! Still my favorite of hers.

4. Chasing Perfect (Fool’s Gold #1) by Susan Mallery – “Welcome to Fool’s Gold, CA!” I LOVE this town, y’all! And the cast of characters are certainly charming.

5. Simply Irresistible (Lucky Harbor #1) by Jill Shalvis – GUYS! If you’re looking for fun and steamy and hilarious, then THIS is the series you want to read! TRUST!

6. Exclusively Yours (Kowalski Family #1) by Shannon Stacey – This is another example of a big, funny, crazy family. The Kowalskis will definitely steal your heart. This story of old high school sweethearts reunited is truly fun.

7. Big Sky Country (Swoon-Worthy Cowboys #1) by Linda Lael Miller – While this one’s not as steamy as my other recs, it has a great slow-building romance, and there’s COWBOYS! :D And sibling rivalries! And old parental scandal in a small town! Good stuff. :)

8. Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (Love By Numbers #1) by Sarah MacLean – This is definitely one series you guys could totally start with if you’re looking to jump into some Historical Romance. The heroine is fun and adventurous and the hero is a TOTAL RAKE! haha

9. The Princess and the Peer (The Princess Brides #1) by Tracy Anne Warren – Another great Historical! I loved that this story is a friendship-to-love romance.

10. Cutting Loose (Sisterhood Diaries #1) by Susan Andersen – This is my latest read and I must say, I LOVED IT! This story of three childhood best friends felt like a nice change from the small town setting reads I’ve come across lately.  Each chapter starts with a small diary entry, which is really cool. Also! The hero? And Irish Catholic redhead sailor. Yup. And he’s HOT!! Just look at that cover!

Logan is barely seventeen, and barely dead. To find eternal rest, the ghost rock star must make peace with his brother Mickey, before his guilt over Logan’s death drives him to suicide.

Krista sees ghosts everywhere, but never the one she needs most. A chance boardwalk encounter with Logan turns her Senior Week party into a rescue mission. Can her own grief give her the strength to save Mickey’s life?

Loaded with bonus material, the “Bridge” ebook is the perfect introduction to the young-adult Shade trilogy—a tale of ghosts, music, and everlasting love.

"Bridge" was originally published in the YA paranormal anthology Enthralled: Paranormal Diversions, edited by Melissa Marr and Kelley Armstrong.

"Bridge" the ebook will include Lots o" Logan in one place:
•The story "Bridge"
•Lyrics to "Forever," the song he wrote and sang for Aura on the tear-jerkingest page of Shade (listed on GR as Shade #1.5)
•Logan's deleted interludes from Shift (listed on GR as Shade 2.1), including an EXCLUSIVE "Outro" that shows what Logan thought of Zachary when they met.
1. Heart-to-heart interview with Logan and his brother Mickey, the other major character in "Bridge." The brooding, tortured Mickey has never before spoken in public, and this interview will be EXCLUSIVELY available in this ebook.
2. Actual scanned images of Logan's songwriting journal as he was writing "Forever."

"Bridge" is the first in what has been dubbed the "SHADEboys Trifecta of Awesome," continuing with "Shattered" (Zachary's novella, listed on GR as Shade #3.5) in May 2013 and Martin's as-yet-untitled short story in August 2013 (listed on GR but not numbered yet).

I’ve always known this story would be sad, which is probably the reason I put off reading it for so long, but I’m so glad I finally got to it. And it was sad, but it was also like exhaling. I felt like I could let go of some of my worry for Mickey, and I feel like I understand him so much better now. I didn’t know it was written in verse! That was such an awesome surprise! And it was the perfect way to tell this story, especially since it deals with Mickey and Logan, who totally know about verse. Their story flowed so perfectly and beautifully. I really can’t imagine it written a different way and having the same emotional effect. It’s seriously perfect, I tell you! Also, it only made me love Mickey more, hehe. Must read for any Shade series fan.
