Across the Universe (Across the Universe #1) by Beth Revis
3 out of 5 Stars!
Publication Date: January 11th 2011 by Razorbill

A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn’t do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed’s hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there’s only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

I can’t express how claustrophobic I felt throughout this whole book, LOL! Thank you, Beth Revis!! I seriously felt like I couldn’t breathe at times and actually had to step outside of my apartment to gulp down some fresh air. How many books can you say have had that kind of effect on you? Me? This is probably the only one so far.

I also can’t deny that I have never imagined being frozen so that I could be woken up in the future. But this book has now changed my mind forever. I do not want to be, essentially, buried alive in ice! Just to have my mind be alert for centuries! How horrible…

Across the Universe was a great mix of scifi, dystopian, and mystery. While the pace may not be fast, I thought it was well done for this story. Also, it had alternating chapters, which I love! A lot of the technology was really cool to read about, especially the gravtubes and floppies. I don’t think I’d like a commlink installed in my ear though.

I loved that this book brings up a lot of questions about morality and ethics. It definitely makes you consider the rights and wrongs and the what-would-I-do-in-these-situations. One thing graphically described was the Season, as in, the mating season. I must say, it disturbed me a little. Also, the almost rape unsettled me. I kind of get that it was to show us just how far gone everyone was, but it was crazy! And the guys got nothing but black eyes for it! I really hope Luthe gets what’s coming to him in the next book. Something needs to be done about it.

While I did enjoy this story, I can’t say I really connected with the main characters. In fact, I probably felt a stronger connection to Harley, who is an important secondary character. He really affected me. With all that said, I was actually unable to put it down. I needed to know what would happen next! I look forward to reading the rest of the series. I want to know if they’ll ever make it to their destination after all!

I loved this book too! It really felt like I was on the ship too. Have you read A MILLION SUNS? It’s even better! Great review :)

Thanks! I plan to read AMS soon. :)

I can’t wait for you to read book number 2, based on your review! But I have to agree, I connected with Harley far more than the 2 main characters.

(And? The whole freezing/claustrophobic thing? Totally creeped me out the whole book.)

Glad I’m not the only one who’s creeped out! :) Harley really wormed his way into my heart.

You’re dead on with the two main characters. I couldn’t stand them or see them as real individuals at all (not having any common sense? fine. acting completely space bonkers? fine. acting completely space-tarded? no. not cool.)

    • http://www.gonewiththewords.com/ Jess @ Gone with the Words

LOL! There were moments where I just wanted to shake some common sense into them for sure!!

Okay. I loved this book so much. But I loved A Million Suns even more and you will too, I promise.

And the claustrophobic feeling: have you read Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi? Amazing book, but even more claustrophobic. I LOVE Paolo and I love his ability to make me feel that way. Beth and Paolo have talent to reach through and make me that uncomfortable, because I’m a bit claustrophic in real life.

Definitely recommend A Million Suns. It’s AMAZING.

I have heard AMS is better! And with you saying it too, I’ll be reading it soon for sure. :)

I’ve had Ship Breaker for.ev.ER! And now I have Drowned Cities! I really need to read it soon…though I may not survive my claustrophobia, lol.

Despite the lack of connection with the main characters, this one intrigues me.   Hopefully there will be a stronger connection for you in the next book(s).  I’ve found that a lot of mysteries are that way; the mystery pulls you in, and then the characters keep you coming back.

I hope for the same. :) Can’t wait to see what you think of it!!

I agree with this review! The Season was incredibly unsettling and I was horrified at the almost rape scene. I get that it was the point to show how animalistic they are but yikes.  I couldn’t exactly connect with the main characters either but I did get where they were coming from. Harley was my favourite too!

Glad I wasn’t the only one put off by it! Harley was a huge WIN in this story. :)

I have a lot of love for this series and the 2nd book is FANTASTIC.

I definitely plan to read it soon!

I second your thoughts on Harley! As a matter of fact, I actually felt more chemistry between him and Amy than I did Elder and Amy, ha! But, alas, that was not to be. Love your review, Jess!

    • http://www.gonewiththewords.com/ Jess @ Gone with the Words

Yes!! And even in the scenes with Amy, Harley overshadowed her, IMO. :) Thanks, Steph!!

Great review, Jess! I’ve had this book for a few weeks and have yet to read it. Hopefully Book #2 will be better for you.

I hope so too! Can’t wait to see what you think. :)

Loved this book. It was weird but in a good-sort-of-weird way. Great review.

Haha! Yeah, I can see that. :) Thanks!!

I just got this one really recently, so I can’t wait to start it! It really does sound like it would be a good read overall :)

    • http://www.gonewiththewords.com/ Jess @ Gone with the Words

Yeah, overall it’s really intriguing. The mystery really makes this a page turner. Hope you like it!!

I have heard of this book, and while it sounds good, it just may not be my cup of tea.  Thank you so much for your honest review.

  • Lena @ Addicted 2 Novels

I’m glad you liked it, but I’m sad you didn’t connect with any of the characters.  I can see where you’re coming from though and completely understand about the claustrophobia!  I promise A Million Suns is a lot better and in my personal opinion, it’s easier to connet with Elder than Amy.  LOVE YOU!  Thanks for the honest and fabulous review!
